I'm a federal employee and ethics requirements only allow us to accept nominal gifts, ie. under $20. So, public officials are bound by ethics requirements that only permit accepting nominal gifts from those they regulate. Obviously, these requirements are not always followed or enforced for those who are high up with a lot of power.

There should also be very heavy restrictions on their investments
