I do not know about other parts of the country but in Tampa Florida to all the way south to Naples the economy does not seem that bad. Restaurants like PF Chang's, Olive Garden, BJs, Bahama Breeze, Cheesecake Factory all are usually quite busy. In the evening 20 30 minutes wait is common. Home Depot, Floor and Decor, have been very crowded. Houses are selling like hot cakes. Parking lots are usually full with 70 - 80 k trucks , Audis, BMW's . Starbucks are crowded as usual. If this is bad economy then I am not sure how the good economy would look like.
The UK pay to get infected thing is to study the transmission rates. You have a medical background. How do they study transmission rates, they need to infect new people to see how it spreads. I'm not saying it's true or false, but it's easy to fall into confirmation bias every time something new comes out.
