Hey GM, I've been considering this (currently 24k in credit card debt) and was wondering -- how effective are the credit repair agencies? I currently rent so in maybe the next two or three years I'd like to buy a house (I know... tough when youre looking at that much debt). Any insight would be helpful, thanks!

Credit repair agencies work, and the are cheap. I do outline some of this in the article.

Hi Greg,

Thank you for that guide! I'm 58 (will be 59-1/2 in late Dec) I have a mortgage on my home ($228k @ 3.65%). I pay an extra $200/mnth towards the principal.

Question: Do I "strive" to pay down this debt before poop hits the fan or just continue monthly payments?

Thanks in advance Greg :)

I've bene wondering that as well. Started to pay extra this year, but it would still take me three years to pay off at this rate.

I'm a bit dissapointed, Greg.

First, If you took out a loan unsecured or not, have the balls to pay it back. Getting out of it is a lowlife move.

I thought this was going to be about really getting out of debt, not just unsecured debt.

I've been 100% debt free for more than 15 years. How you might ask? Several approaches... Be responsible to start. Then get an emergency fund. Then pay off your credit cards and cut them up. Get rid of all consumer debt.

Next Step... pay your house off early using the Mortgage Recast method. This lowers the principle, and reduces the interest.... but it also improves your cashflow so that you can do another recast.

I paid my house off 23 years early saving 100's of $Ks! Saved enough to put 3 kids through college without borrowing a penny.

It works, and you can do it honorably. Remember, the rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.
