I think its important to mention that the use of the term, Evil, need not be spiritual and in many cases can be objective, though spiritual and religion is where many people initially go when they see those words and don't have a full understanding of what exactly evil is, and how it comes about.
There was an excellent book by Ilyin on Resisting Evil by Force, which was written to refute Tolstoy's pacifism, and the sentimental moralism and nihilism that is promoted by that ideology. He really covers evil quite well.
