I learned data science in college for fun, so I can't really say I'm expert to this field, but when I heard Greg said MMRI was back tested in one of his previous videos, I trust him. I assume when Greg and his team did back test, they used historical data not only back to 2008, but also back to far early in historical American stock market in order to approve MMRI really worked with historical stock market data.
The reason MMRI didn't work in March 2020 is because covid, which is a Black Swan event. No one can predict Black swan events.

I went back to Feb 2008 and did a sample test. The MMRI was at 172 I believe
