I'm not a trader yet either but am learning a lot; I see some comments about beginners learning the hard way. May I suggest a better way: The VIX index is at an Uninvestible state at it's current levels. I've learned some key VIX levels from Kieth@Hedgeye-VIX 9-15=Bull Market anyone can pick stocks here. VIX 18-28 is the Choppy waters-traders rule here. VIX >31=the Oh Fuck bucket, this is the full-on Bear market. Only the best and most experienced traders rule here especially those w/experience in the last 2 bubbles-2000 & 2008. The fact that Greg trades in this VIX range speaks volumes for him. I hope this helps someone out!
VIXY saved my ass, bought @18 and sold at 38. I think it's a good idea to own it at around 10 in a bull market in case something bad happens, historically it doesn't go much lower than that, just buy it and forget it when the $10 range happens.

fyi... The ETFs and ETNs, similar to the paper and physical disconnect in the pm markets, have a disconnect in valuations that is being negatively exasperated under current conditions. Zerohedge has a couple of articles today on the energy and, recently, the precious metals markets explaining this.

Thanks for posting. I might add that the direction the vix is trending gives early warning of direction changes.

If you are still holding, UCO had a reverse split. Your account will/should be "made whole" by your broker. Call them.
