The SEC need to know Greg’s followers are on the site for his insight into the markets, not his stock recommendations. If people buy because Greg says to buy then it opens the door for the SEC to argue that Greg’s motive was to influence the share price for his own financial benefit. If they can show Greg bought and sold individual stocks and there is a link between the timing of his recommendation and his subsequent selling of stocks they have an argument.
Not saying they would win, but we don’t want Greg wasting money on legal fees to defend the argument, regardless of how tenuous it is.
“What a coincidence, I just bought the same stock” would be more helpful Greg, or “I beat you to it and also have some” might also help.
