Point is that it's not end of the world. One can easily live off a vegetable garden in the backyard, going to the ocean to catch some fish, and couple bags of rice and beans. No food for one month is not even something to be concerned about at all.

Such things can happen very fast. If you don't have a gun when you desperately need one, then you have chosen to be a victim.
There are different guns for different purposes, so you may want to get more than one gun. Make sure that you can operate it and that it feels comfortable to you before you buy a gun. Besides finding a good and friendly local gun dealer, I recommend attending the largest gun show in your state and hope that you're in a gun friendly state. An NRA certified instructor can give you lots of excellent help with safety rules and shooting skills.
