I can't comprehend how that would even be possible. Trump has publicly totally embraced the tariff position. You can't pin problems on anyone else now.

There is no problem except in the Brainwashed minds of people who beleive the nonsense that Tariffs are bad and China is vital to the American Economy. It a big world and there are other Countries like Vietnam and India who are willing to make a Tariff deal and replace China as a source of CHEAP LABOR that enriches US Global Companies . You have to understand that the difference in production costs between an item built in Asia vs the USA is not a big component of the retail price . Take Nike shoes, for example. If the production cost in Vietnam is $8, producing them in the U.S. would cost about $14–$16. At most, that's a $10 difference. But Nike sells those shoes in the U.S. for anywhere from $70 to $300. The same goes for all major brands. So the Tarff is not passed on to the consumer dollar for dollar. The Global Corporations on wall street have to absorb some of this cost since thier Profit Margin is already INFLATED to begin with and they cannot simply raise prices and keep market share. This is why it effects thier earnings and Stock Prices. 80% of Americans dont care about stock prices. These products will be made here or outside of China where the labor cost is even LOWER or equal and there will be no overall effect. If Tariffs are bad for an economy other countries would not be imposing them against the USA. We have to adjust to the changes and not complain about them. In the long run the USA and the American people will be in a better position when our trade imbalance is equalized.

Good write up Frank, however I believe its is the media, the talking heads and finally the citizens themselves who are brainwashing each other,(rabble rousers) a conspiratorial effort to blame Trump for the collapse of the world economy.

Here it(tariffs) is in it's simplest form. The larger the exporter the larger the loser. If these tariffs were left in place in perpetuity the American standard of living would increase every year, all things being equal!

But that ain't going to happen as the monetary(sic)system we have now is approaching a mathematical, societal, and financial terminus!

my comment re noticing the vitriol surrounding tariffs...

Believe me, the small disruption from this tariff nonsense will seem inconsequential after the denouement of this tremendous asset inflation blown by our friendly Federal Reserve.

What are now our "markets" are gas bags of inflation floating on a sea of debt which just happens to be our currency!

Since no one takes accountability you can bet the Fed will muster the troops and move heaven and earth to convince you it is all Trumps fault, if they convince us they will continue on with their plan of subjugation.

Taylor Caldwell wrote, "There will be no peace in the tormented world, only a programmed and systematic series of wars and calamities, until the plotters have gained their objective: an exhausted world willing to submit to planned Marxist economy and total and meek enslavement - in the name of peace."

"Almost the whole world is Communist in its thinking, and political parties of all persuasions are Communist in their policies. What is globalization and the concept of one world government but the centralization of control by an all-powerful State. It is Communist doctrine."

I'll agree. it was disasterous.

I was coming home from singapore after chinese new year and texted to my brothers... "It looks like this mainly affects the older peeps so hopefully they won't shut everything down".. They did and it was an economic disaster.

Again, I admit he made the wrong choice.

At least he's shutting down the DOE and much other parts of government now... What other candidate would have done better than Trump?

No one can. There is no real substantive difference in the two criminal parties, when in power. It's all lies and propaganda. This is another Dem set up for the maket to crash on the Repugnants. Then we go pendulum swing the other way. Almost like clockwork. We have a debt based system, so inflation and accelerating debt/credit cycle is mandatory to keep it going. Sit back and enjoy getting poorer, in fiat currency terms.

He pushed them harder to lower rates. Which is what we need. We need the fed to lower interest rates or we're going to have 2.5 trillion in interest payments per year real soon.

Expand full comment
Dpp 1235's avatar

Lower/low interest rates have created the $36 trillion mess that we are IN!!!

What happened to the debt, just recently, when we were damn near zero for YEARS, O that's right, it kept EXPLODING higher!!!

So I'll ask it again, how do lower rates help?

Interest payments, that's a rounding error in the grand scheme of things!!!

Expand full comment
gerkenstein's avatar

INTEREST PAYMENTS ARE 1 TRILLION per year already.... and growing because we've had to refinance since the Fed started raising rates. We have 9 trillion in debt that comes due this year.

If interest rates are high. We lock in those higher interest rates and have to pay more interest.

Paying more interest increases the deficit.

We're screwed either way probably.

But boosting our currency involved increasing the value of the debt. and the interest payments.

We can't afford to do that. Keep your gold.

Inflation is the only option.

You have to get through!

Taiwan has agreed to drop ALL tariffs on the United States, joining India, Israel, Vietnam, and Cambodia, who also intend to zero out their tariffs

Over 50 countries have called to negotiate with Trump so far.

--What you've seen so far is Trump laid out tariffs across EVERYONE - no stone untaxed, so to speak - and as countries come forward to negotiate better terms, those will get better treatment up to and including free trade going BOTH ways... those that don't come forward are taxed. That leaves us in a much freer trade situation for those who play, and those that don't we'll get revenue from their attempts to enter our market. It's very very simple. Win-win strategy.
