The mechanisms that destroy an economy are not well understood by the masses. Much less the system of government that rules them.

What the masses do understand is that they themselves are going under.

The truth of why is lost upon them. Trump will be the patsy for the central bank defaults.

Throughout history, world governments that fall economically also fall politically.

Not only are our markets and economy failing, but the political system as well.

My guess for the future is based on the history anyone can study.

I act accordingly.

Well, Arg, I wish you were not so prophetic. I, as a Pollyanna Trump supporter, want everything to work out for the betterment of us hard-working middle Americans. However, the Central Bank Demons have not been kind to workers and American dreamers since 1913.

The President does have the bankers and the Dems by their tails, and I fear he is going to be whipsawed and dragged through the muck. If he survives, then America survives, battered and bruised, but still breathing. Those serpents of evil devoured the good and evil earthlings on this globe as soon as Eve chomped down on that forbidden Red Delicious Apple. How about something uplifting Arg. Boy, America needs it. I’m not insane. I get what you’re saying. You as macro analysts need a complete measure of economy that includes government spending. But government is not a net benefit to the economy, it is a net drag on economy. In my opinion, government spending needs to be subtracted from gdp, not included in gdp to get an accurate picture of gdp for the private economy

Maybe more and more people will drop their TV and "Smartphones" and notice that there's no real measure of our economy. Trump could then be blamed for waking more people up. How sick is that?

I'm a bit confused by all this. The GDP was fake before when funding for wars was included, but now they're planning to remove all that so wouldn't that most likely make the GDP negative? That means we'd likely be in a recession already as we all thought, but now Lutnick is saying they're gonna somehow balance the check book and that will magically reduce rates for us common folks? So doesn't it seem like they're trying to crash the market?

“You know, that governments historically have messed with GDP,” Lutnick said on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures.” “They count government spending as part of GDP. So I’m going to separate those two and make it transparent.”

They are not saying they are gonna hide government spending Greg. And you say?

Hey, food for thought. I was in India. I ate a food vendor stall on the street. In a matter of 6 hours, he make the equivalent of $150/day. He spends about $25/day for his entire family. His saving is around $100/day. Now gdp of India is nowhere near that of usa. Let me ask a question, does this street vendor have more savings than the average American?

Expand full comment
JAIMIN PATEL's avatar

The whole concept of gdp being a measurement of spending needs to be scrapped completely. GDP needs to be a measurement of production, not soending. And government spending should be subtracted from that production measurement to give an accurate picture of net production available for private sector to consume. I’m surprised private institutions like von mises have not come up with their own measurement of productivity and production in economy

How any Christian can continue to back a man of such low moral standards, gutter standards I consider when Trump remained a friend of J Epstein for years, the sham release of the Epstein files (i told a trump supporter way back this would happen) and then to add more scum moral compass apparently Trump/admin negotiated with Romania to get the Tate brothers released. They flew to FL first class and went to Maralargo. These actions show there will likely never be retribution for the victims. Repulsive.

People who have TDS WOULD think that TIGS is brilliant. And there ARE people who think Trump is God. I'm not denying that. But to think that the existence of TIGS is a rational comeback for somebody who has TDS is a logical fallacy. If you have TDS, then you have TDS. It is NOT because someone else thinks that Trump is God. It is funny that Greg made up TIGS, because he does NOT have TDS.

It is actually not helpful at all that Greg made up TIGS. People have been trying to explain the very real mental illness of irrationally hating everything Trump wants to do for years. And now we have people like you, feeling completely exonerated, going "I don't have TDS. You have TIGS. durr hurr."

Government spending does not truly add to our GDP. It should not be included in GDP anyways. The govt does nothing to add to GDP as all they do is tax, and spend trillions of dollars into oblivion with nothing to show for it. Put govt spending in its own column for us to see the waste.

Using the present definition of GDP simply makes it more possible (and likely that) our government leaders can "boost" the GDP numbers simply by spending more money on governmental expenses. The key issue is whether or not these expenses benefit the U.S. public. Why not also calculate a separate number called GPP (Gross Public Product) that excludes all government spending so we can see the difference and make up our own minds... about trends, return on our spending, government efficiency and inefficiency?
