But government is not a net benefit to the economy, it is a net drag on economy. In my opinion, government spending needs to be subtracted from gdp, not included in gdp to get an accurate picture of gdp for the private economy

Hey, food for thought. I was in India. I ate a food vendor stall on the street. In a matter of 6 hours, he make the equivalent of $150/day. He spends about $25/day for his entire family. His saving is around $100/day. Now gdp of India is nowhere near that of usa. Let me ask a question, does this street vendor have more savings than the average American?

The key issue is whether or not these expenses benefit the U.S. public. Why not also calculate a separate number called GPP (Gross Public Product) that excludes all government spending so we can see the difference and make up our own minds... about trends, return on our spending, government efficiency and inefficiency?
