a high school friend of mine was a total computer programmer. He wrote lots of these algorithms when he worked for a large bank. We used to be friends on FB. He did not like me pointing out that Wall Street is the biggest EVIL mankind has invented.

In 2006 we optimized the I/0 systems for much lower latency to support High Frequency trading in the early days when it was getting popular. Those were the millisecond latency days. This was on one of the main Large storage systems used by all the big financial systems in the world. In those days, they usually had about 50 systems at about $4 M each. Around 2010, we started deploying solid state disk that got latency down to the microsecond level. Around 2015 we started deploying NVMe, which even lowered the latency further. All this in addition to moving the systems closer to the exchange.
